''REBALANCED AND RECONSIDERED''
Jonathan Andrews, Body Shop Launch Engineer
Every gram earns its way onto the car
Lean materials and efficient new processes forge the light, stiff Stingray space frame, which helps achieve 50-50 weight distribution and impressive power-to-weight ratio. One-third the weight of steel, aluminum improves rigidity, which in turn enhances cornering and handling. Lightweight carbon-nano-composite underbody panels bond to aluminum, further reducing weight for more precise driver control. This revolutionary chassis improves torsional rigidity, reducing noise and elevating performance to an art.
Coupe and convertible as one
Stingray coupe and convertible share an identical rigid aluminum frame structure. Originally designed as an open-top sports car, no reinforcements were required to create the convertible. No matter which body style you choose, Stingray remains a pure, precision-born machine.
Machined for precision
The lightweight aluminum space frame and completely reengineered powertrain demanded a shift in mind-set and an evolutionary approach to precision engineering.
Stingray incorporates the world’s fastest-acting suspension. Magnetic Ride Control™ is an available real-time damping system that “reads” the road every millisecond and can adjust in under 15 milliseconds. Available on the Z51 Performance and Handling Package, Magnetic Ride Control includes Performance Traction Management, which features five settings tailored to driver skill level and track conditions.
One-third the weight of steel, the Stingray aluminum space frame is 45 kilograms lighter than its predecessor.
Segmented aluminum rails — varying in thickness from 2 mm to 11 mm — enable tailored gauge, shape and strength properties with minimal weight.
Stiffer than steel
The all-aluminum Stingray space frame assembly, used on both coupe and convertible, is also 57% stiffer than the steel frame of the previous generation Stingray.
Bowling Green Assembly
Every 2018 Corvette Stingray is built by experienced craftsmen using state-of-the-art processes refined at our Bowling Green Assembly plant.
Completely redesigned, the 6.2L V8 engine boasts up to an estimated 460HP and an available 623Nm of torque plus it achieves a 0 - 100 time of 3.8 seconds. A distinctive rear transaxle layout achieves optimal weight balance. A trio of innovative technologies rarely seen in any elite sports car achieves revolutionary power and fuel efficiency. Compact engine design lowers the hoodline and vehicle center of gravity. And a dry-sump oil system, available with the Z51 Performance Package, delivers through high G-force cornering.
Choice of transmissions
A 7-speed manual transmission complements the V8 powerhouse that propels Stingray. The rear transaxle location enables a 50/50 vehicle weight balance. Intelligent sensors enhance the driving experience by simulating heel-toe shifting perfection at the touch of a switch. Active Rev Matching anticipates gear selections and matches engine speed for smooth transitions during both upshifts and downshifts. An available all-new 8-speed paddle-shift automatic offers smooth control with quick and precise shifts and manual mode for higher level of driver control. The 8-speed automatic delivers dual-clutch performance without sacrificing performance.
The 6.2L V8 engine boasts up to 460 horsepower and EPA-estimated 10.6 L/100km
Active Fuel Management
Designed for peak power when you need it and fuel efficiency when you don’t, Active Fuel Management (AFM) deactivates four cylinders when cruising at consistent speeds and offers all eight cylinders with one touch of the accelerator. AFM is utilized or disabled at the driver’s discretion. Labor reduces. Fuel economy improves. The driver notices peak performance, and nothing else.
Variable Valve Timing
Variable Valve Timing optimizes camshaft timing to improve high-rpm horsepower and low-end torque. An intelligent position sensor detects engine operating conditions and adjusts the timing of intake and exhaust valves. The result is increased power or torque when needed, enhancing performance and bolstering fuel economy when combined with Active Fuel Management™.
A key performance technology, Direct Injection delivers fuel directly into the combustion chamber to achieve maximum thermal and combustion efficiency. More than 6 million hours of computational analysis went into developing the combustion system alone. The result is an impressive 11.5:1 compression ratio that increases torque, power and fuel efficiency.

Hood air extractor
A functional hood air extractor directs air from the front grille up through the forward-tilted radiator and out of the engine compartment. Each blade is precisely angled for optimal airflow. The result is reduced front-end lift, increased downforce and improved handling at high speeds.
The available Z51 Performance Package includes dual brake ducts that transport air from the front grille through the wheel well to effectively cool the front brakes and expel heat. This efficient airflow controls temperature, reduces brake fade and optimizes stopping performance.
Dual rear quarter panel intake vents, also included with the Z51 Performance Package, guide airflow to cool two separate heat exchangers. One routes air to the transmission oil cooler. The other cools the rear differential. Hot air escapes through tailored rear taillamp vents and lower-rear fascia outlets. This system was adapted from Corvette Racing to reduce temperatures during high-performance driving.
Frosted indirect high-intensity discharge headlamps are the eyes to the technological soul of the Stingray, emanating crisp color, brightness and efficiency. The new elements bear a sharper, more sinister shape framed by edge-lit amber LED turn signals and black chrome housing. Bi-Xenon HID technology achieves high and low beams with a single light engine.
Signature four-element tailamps bear a new angular shape and recede elegantly into three-dimensional sculpted lenses. Concealed indirect LED lamps cast light into a reverse reflector to achieve crisp and even luminescence. A high-mounted stop lamp crowns the rear deck lid. It's design that doesn't look back.
